In the Force versus Reason divide, Shame is definitely on the side of Force.

On the Side of Force when people are wrong we Punish them to make them so full of Fear they'll avoid being wrong in the future. The feeling of Shame is what we feel when we Punish ourselves. (Or perhaps what we feel while we await the punishment we expect. Shame is a sort of wincing as we await the blow that we expect to fall.)

Shame can be carried all the way to suicide. In fact it is perhaps an essential component of most suicides.

Whenever anyone ever feels shame they should try to remember it's part of the violent monkey World of Force and dismiss it from their minds.

On the side of Reason, of course we all make mistakes. We constantly make mistakes. In fact our every moment is always to some extent a mistake. We are never acting perfectly. Life is constant failure. And should be a constant process of recognizing failures and continously improving.

But because instead we're in the Force World we can't stand to think that we're constantly failing. All that failing would mean constant punishment. It would mean a sort of mental equivalent of constant wincing waiting to be 'hit' which is the equivalent of punishing ourselves (Shame.)

Rather than do that we for the most part instead become uncritical of ourselves. We become Closeminded.

The writing goals:
1. Making people seek/value truth more. Getting them to equate knowledge with happiness, no matter how untrue this may actually be at times.

2. Reducing indifference/increasing compassion in people.

3. Getting people to choose reason instead of force for solving their differences.

Why? Because I choose to play the game of trying to make the world a better place. Such can be done in many ways. I prefer the most grand way.

Why? Because I live to create things. It's my idea of fun. It's how I prefer to spend my free time. Create this, create that. I wish I had a castle out back I was slowly building. But that would just be a small diversion as it would be less grand.

...the secret polemical heart. The overriding direction.

But the above is of course extremely vague. The ways to attempt to accomplish such tasks are endless.

...when you write of villains, the reader learns to recognize what a "villain" is and hopefully have such memories of what villains do ingrained in them so that they themselves don't later in life become such a person. In this way you reduce indifference. You reduce the use of force. Etc. Etc. So often I see people act awfully and I think of how they're practically a 2D bad guy and I wonder how they can be that. And I think (and it seems to be true) that usually they're the sort who never really got into that whole "reading thing."

The standard stories generally accomplish tasks 1, 2 and 3. There can then be further levels; where in order to take compassion, reason and the love of knowledge even further we have no choice but to learn to reject the social norms of this society...

Negative reinforcement or force instead of reason helps cause people to view realizing they're wrong as some very negative thing. They see 'wrong' as equaling punishment and thus want to avoid being wrong and one way to do so is avoid admitting/facing ever being wrong.

Anger and force help ensure a closeminded world.

Listing the ways in which mankind is dysfunctional

blah, blah, blah!

1. Conformity
Like with the Soloman Asch experiment. But for a whole group to ever get to a point where individuals feel forced to conform (or too lazy to just think) there has to be other things going on.
http://www.age-of-the-sage.org/psychology/social/asch_conformity.html

2. Indifference
People don't hate chickens, they're just utterly indifferent to them. A person can even be a sadist, a serial murderer; and ultimately the essential reason is because of their indifference to the suffering of others.

3. Misperceiving indifference in others
This is also often called hate. People usually bring it down to hate and indifference. But I'll get to that in a second.
There was an old twilight zone episode that demonstarted it sort ot:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xIVIOPL1Vf4
If you just suspect that surely someone is actually "evil" (indifferent to the suffering they're causing) then that alone can ruin everything.

4. Force over Reason
When we perceive people as causing unnecessary harm and just not caring we think of them as being evil, and feel that it is useless to reason with them. When we think of them as "evil" we get angry, we feel hate and we turn to force.
We should try to stay with reason much more than we do instead of resorting to force, especially if we are actually misperceiving "evil" or indifference to suffering.

5. Too much faith/religion
I don't think having faith in a "god" has to be a bad thing. I don't think believing in a life after death has to be a bad thing at all. But people take it way too far and start having faith in all kinds of crap. They believe in heaven and wait for that instead of trying to make this world a good place. Most importantly they just in general get away from thinking and instead prefer to just believe whatever they happen to want to believe and this leads to believing all kinds of things which are harmful and also gets people away from even questioning if something they believe might be causing harm.
....

One can go inside the major reasons... So much can fit under conforming.....

6. The fear of being perceived as gay + hating gay people
Of course persecuting this minority sucks but it hurts the majority I think pretty majorly actually in that it keeps men cold. It keeps them afraid to express their emotions and have close relationships with other men, lest they be perceived as gay. It keeps people isolated ultimately. This is the result of conforming/religion and some indifference I suppose and if it's got conforming and religion it's using plenty of force over reason.

7. Monogamy/Jealousy?
Causes isolation. Less meaningful connections. Less love obviously.

8. Capitalism
Unregulated capitalism is insane. Communities have to care about the people in their communities. Otherwise they're not communities. People aren't allowed to go around beating the crap out of one another just because some people are stronger or because they may happen to get lucky in a fight. In the same way you can't have people getting economically destroyed just because they're not as smart or didn't get as lucky economically.

If people are free to beat the shit out of one another, it's not a community. And if people are living under the bridge, living without health care, etc it's not a community.

Expressing anger

Just supposing one was still devo and occasionally forgot and went back to believing in evil, and feeling hate and anger, in the spirit of honesty should they express this anger?

Never express anger unless you are very close to actually using some force. Expressions of anger are Only a message that you think the person in question is evil (causing harm and just not caring, not possible to be reasoned with). All such expressions do is potentially cause the person to feel fear and thus you have indeed reduced the interaction to Force instead of Reason. We're all devo and feel anger anyway, but unless you're actually about ready to go beyond Reason, you should simply be Dishonest and Hide this.

Honesty isn't always the best policy. Finally. For the first time in my life I'm saying this.

For me you could express anger and it'd be OK. I have empathy and can see the pain which caused the anger and that you've reached a point where you feel like I'm just not even trying to understand. But apparently the vast majority of manking isn't like this. Everyone else sees the anger and assumes the worst; they assume force may be coming any second, and apparently that completely takes precedence over any attempts at empathy.

Express sadness only. And if that doesn't work, float away on the postindustrial wind.
